Our annual Distinguished Citizen Dinner will be held on August 10 at the Elks Lodge in Fairmont. Hershel "Woody" Williams is our honoree this year. Born on October 2, 1923 and a native of Fairmont, he is a retired US Marine Corps warrant officer and US Dept of Veterans Affairs veterans service representatiave who received the US military's highest decoration for valor - the Medal of Honor - for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. He and three others are the only living Medal of Honor recipients from WWII. In addition, he is the only surviving Marine to have received the Medal of Honor during the Second World War, and is the only surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Pacific theater of the war.
